Ikram: A Business Built for More Than One Season

Ikram Al-Shouha, a rural entrepreneur in Mafraq and a graduate of Johud's Women's Digital Centres, run in partnership with Orange Jordan.

Ikram Al-Shouha built a diversified enterprise in Mafraq, a governorate people usually talk about in terms of what it lacks.

Mafraq is generally described by its difficulties. It is large, largely rural, carries one of the heaviest refugee-hosting burdens in Jordan, and appears in most reporting as a place where things are needed.

“In a rural economy, one product is a bet. Several is a business.”

Ikram Al-Shouha lives there and runs a business.

She is a graduate of Johud's Women's Digital Centres, delivered with Orange Jordan, and what distinguishes her enterprise is that it is deliberately diversified, not a single product dependent on a single season or a single buyer, but several income streams that hold each other up.

That choice is more sophisticated than it looks, and it is the kind of decision a training course either equips a woman to make or does not. A rural woman with one product is exposed to everything: a bad harvest, a market that shifts, a customer who stops buying. The same woman with several is running an actual enterprise, with the resilience that implies.

The obstacles she worked around are the standard ones for rural Jordan, and they are not small: distance from markets, thinner infrastructure, fewer buyers within reach, and a social expectation that a woman's work is a supplement rather than a livelihood. Digital skills do not remove any of those. What they do is make distance matter less: a customer two governorates away is reachable from a phone in Mafraq on exactly the same terms as from a shop in Amman.

Johud chose to tell her story on World Rural Women's Day, and the framing is apt. Rural women in Jordan carry an enormous share of unpaid agricultural and domestic labour and hold a very small share of formal income. Every enterprise like Ikram's is a small correction to that ratio, and, more usefully, a demonstration to the women around her that the correction is available.

She is not an exception being celebrated. She is a working example being circulated.
